We couldn’t make a top 10 list of spooky settings without mentioning one of the many eerie corners on our own home soil. Visit the East End of London to follow in the footsteps of Jack the Ripper. Not literally. Mystery still surrounds his true identity, and a walking tour of the murder scenes, complete with shocking descriptions of his deeds, will stay in your head for days.
Capuchin Catacombs, Sicily
Sicily is home to the Capuchin Catacombs, a tomb filled with the remains of almost 80,000 people. Out of that huge number at least one of these in bound to be a ghost, so if you fancy a truly spooky trip then hit up this beautiful, if morbid, island landmark.

Blair Witch highlighted the fact that forests are scary places. Which is why you should head to the Hoai-Baciu Forest in Romania, thought to be the world’s most haunted collection of trees. It is 250 hectares of unexplained events, ranging from ghost sightings and bizarre apparitions to visitors feeling the urge to throw up.
