Jet2.com Celebrates Six Years At Newcastle

Low-cost leisure airline Jet2.com celebrated its sixth year at Newcastle Airport this week with a special promotion on its cheap flights to Europe’s sunshine destinations. Customers entering a promotional code while booking their flights will get 10 per cent off their ticket prices for a limited period, the carrier declared on Thursday.

Jet2.com also revealed its joy at having had a “record summer” at Newcastle Airport, with around half a million passengers booking flights with the airline – a 56 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2010. This has helped it fulfil its “ambitious” plans to become the largest leisure carrier in the north east of England.

Chief commercial officer Steve Heapy said that since it began offering services from Newcastle in 2005 it has taken some 2.1 million passengers on their holidays, and has greatly expanded the number of routes it offers, as well as increasing the frequency of many flights on existing routes. This year alone it has started flying to Alicante, Faro, Krakow, Prague and Toulouse.

Such expansion has led to an extra Boeing 737 aircraft being added to the Newcastle fleet earlier in 2011, taking the total to five. Jet2.com has also recruited 47 new staff, bringing the total workforce t the hub to 182 and making its passenger handling side completely in-house, with the customer service advantages that this brings, Mr Heapy added.

“When we launched at Newcastle Airport in 2005 our key aim was to offer North East passengers unrivalled choice and flexibility when it comes to their flights and holidays.” he said.

“Six years on we are delighted to be celebrating both a record summer and becoming the region’s largest flight operator. This year alone has been phenomenal.”

Newcastle International Airport’s aviation development director Chris Sanders congratulated Jet2.com and said that the airline was “a firm favourite with our customers”.
