The Empire Lays Back – Celebrate Star Wars Day by booking a Tatooine holiday

After working long and hard on building the Death Star, even the most hardworking and loyal members of the Galactic Empire need to kick back and relax once in a while. So, why not celebrate Star Wars day (May the fourth… get it?!) by booking your very own getaway to the paradise planet of Tatooine?

Of course, we at Holiday Hypermarket have yet to master intergalactic travel, but we can still offer the next best thing. If your starship is on the blink, then you can have just as an authentic Star Wars experience here on Earth, simply by visiting the beautiful country of Tunisia, which was used as the filming locations for scenes on the Skywalker’s home planet of Tatooine. Featuring in every Star Wars movie apart from Episode V, Tunisia is as integral to the series as Darth Vader, Yoda and Luke Skywalker! Here are some of the most popular destinations that should be checked off every die-hard fan’s list:

Tozeur

There are lots of filming locations dotted all over the country, but if you only have time for one stop on your Star Wars tour, then head to the town of Tozeur and the salt lake of Chott el-Jerid. Here, you’ll find the Totooine town of Mos Espa, perfectly preserved. Explore Skywalker’s home town just as you saw it in the movies, complete with Sebulba’s café, the pod-racing arena and Watto’s shop.

Hotel Sidi Driss

Every Star Wars fan will recognise Hotel Sidi Driss as the original home of Luke Skywalker. Situated in the village of Matmâta, the whole settlement has the traditional Berber architecture that is prevalent in Tatooine.

Being such an iconic pop culture location, it’s hard to imagine that the Hotel Sidi Driss would fall into any kind of disrepair, sadly after the filming of the original series that’s exactly what happened. But the filming of the prequel trilogy and some careful owners spearheaded a rejuvenation of the hotel, and it has now been restored to its former glory. Now it’s fit for even the most extreme Star Wars fan!

Djerba

This lovely Tunisian island is home to a couple of iconic Star Wars sites. Ben’s Hermitage, a little house used by fishermen as a storage hut, will be recognisable to most of us as Obi-Wan Kenobi’s house (pictured).

Travel further north and you’ll find Tosche Station, which was a power and distribution hub for Tatooine, where Jedi fighters went to get their equipment charged and vehicles repaired.

If you get tired after a hard day of exploring Tatooine’s most popular sights, then head back to the popular Tunisian beach resorts such as Port El Kantaoui or Yasmine Hammamet where you can perfect your golden Tatooine glow under our (unfortunately one and only!) sun. The universe can wait – take some time out to relax on a well-deserved Tunisian holiday.
