An airline in Hong Kong is making its cabin crew take lessons in Kung Fu so they can deal with drunk and unruly passengers.

Hong Kong Airlines Train Cabin Crew In Kung Fu

Hong Kong Airlines have opened up the lessons to all staff, however for cabin crew it is compulsory that they train in Wing Chun, a form of Kung Fu used in close range combat.

Katherine Cheung, Wing Chun instructor said the martial art is the perfect defence for cabin crew, stating “Wing Chun can be used in small, confined spaces so it’s suited for an aeroplane. It’s easy to learn but difficult to master.”

According to Eva Chan, Hong Kong Airlines’ deputy general manager of corporate communication, the airline claim to have at least three incidents involving disruptive passengers every week.

The extra training has already come in handy for one female crew member when she had to put her new found skills into operation recently, with Chan commenting “Normally, a female cabin crew can’t handle a fat guy, especially if he’s drunk, but because of the training, she can handle it quite easily.”
