Barcelona’s Easter Festivities Draw Tourists and Worshippers

Semana Santa in Barcelona combines religious processions with street festivities.

Cheap holidays in Barcelona are a joy at most times of the year, but Easter in the Catalonian capital can be particularly special. Barcelona is not short of attractions for people enjoying city breaks, with its incredible Gaudi-designed architecture – plus the Gaudi park and the Sagrada Familia cathedral – its numerous bars and restaurants and its sandy beach, but visiting the city at Easter time, during the period which the Spanish call “Semana Santa” (Holy Week), is something else entirely.

Across the whole of Spain the week is marked with a slew of public holidays during which the locals flock into the streets to witness and participate in a series of processions, where the holy icons of their churches and the effigies of their saints – and the Virgin Mary – are paraded for all to see, before being blessed. Many attend a number of masses and ceremonies, while others are simply there for the spectacle.

In Barcelona, Semana Santa is a great opportunity to welcome the spring and the warmer weather, as well as to enjoy some alfresco beers with friends. The bakeries and street stalls of the city are piled high with pastries, chocolates and other treats, adding to the festive atmosphere and helping to ensure hunger is not a problem while you’re waiting for the parade to go by.

There are no shortage of cheap flights to Barcelona available from right across the UK, and this week brought good news on that score for travellers in Wales, with the announcement by Spanish low-cost carrier Vueling that it is launching a new route from Cardiff Airport to the city just in time for the Easter celebrations next year.

Vueling’s Cardiff-Barcelona route will commence on 27 March and tickets are now on sale.

Announcing the new service, Vueling chief executive Alex Cruz said: “Cardiff offers convenient transits and an efficient service so we anticipate the route will be popular for leisure travellers looking for convenient city breaks.”

“There is the strong possibility that more UK routes will be announced soon.”
