Thousands of holidaymakers heading to Lanzarote could be affected by the strike action of baggage handlers, working for Swissport at Lanzarote’s airport.
So why are the strikes happening?
The trade union CC.OO. has announced that its members are annoyed and frustrated at Swissports’ apparent ‘repeated breaches’ of agreements.
As a result, the union filed a strike notice on 6th October 2015 after Swissport supposedly breached an agreement that was reached last year, the agreement requires open negotiations where there’s an alteration in working activity.
The union met with Swissport Handling Lanzarote UTE management to attempt a resolution on 9th October 2015. However this meeting ended with no agreement being reached to stop the impending strike action.
When are these strikes due to take place?
The strikes are due to take place on 18th, 20th, 22nd, 25th, 27th and 29th of October 2015 from 6am until midnight. The union has stated that, if Swissport does not have a change of heart, and the problems are not resolved during the October strikes, then the strikes will become indefinite from 1st November 2015.
So what does this mean?
These strikes are likely to cause some disruption and delays to aircrafts. Swissport provides passenger check-in and handles the baggage for most airlines, which come into Lanzarote airport.
The strikes mean that you and your flight will depart as scheduled, but your luggage on the other hand won’t depart until the day after the strike, as these strikes will have a knock on effect on luggage departing. However, airlines are well prepared for strike action and put emergency plans in place to avoid any unnecessary delays.
What do we recommend?
If you have flights booked on the days effected by the strikes, we would recommend that you contact your holiday company for advice. You should keep yourself up to date with information from your tour operator’s website and ensure that you take out the appropriate travel insurance to make sure the cover is right for you.
