Activities for Mum this Mother’s Day in Tenerife

You might not be in the middle of a Tenerife holiday this weekend for Mother’s Day (note: it’s on Sunday, get a card), but it’s never too late to thank mum for all she does. Tenerife is a great place to take your old mum as there are plenty of siestas, tapas restaurants, beach loungers and gentle paths winding through quaint Spanish villages; she’ll be in heaven.

First stop: the Bot Gardens

Mums love their gardens, so take her to the botanical gardens (official name: Acclimatization Garden of La Orotava) in Puerto de la Cruz, which is a cool escape from the Mediterranean sun. She’ll love the giant strelitzias, tall palms and colourful tropical flowers that flourish in the island heat. Built by Spanish King Carlos back in 1788, this garden is filled with tropical and subtropical plants, and it’s situated in one of the most upscale barrios in the puerto.

Snack time: Spanish tapas

Tapas is a delicacy of Spain that can be enjoyed in style on Tenerife, particularly because the island has easy access to fresh fish and seafood. There are conflicting explanations of how tapas came about; people might have placed a slice of ham or cheese over the brim of their wine glasses to keep flies away, but a grander version states that Alfonso X the Wise (King of Castile in the 13th century) decreed that every alcoholic drink must be served with snacks (his doctor recommended it). Whichever version you believe, get mum some sizzling prawn tapas (Gambas al Ajillo) or crunchy goujons of cod (Churros de Pescado) in a smart Spanish bar this Mother’s Day.

Take a Mother’s Day stroll

Escape the crowds and take a stroll in the dappled forests of La Orotava Valley on Tenerife. Particularly if you’re staying in the north of the island in resorts in Puerto de la Cruz, you can take trails through pine forests and along deep ravines lined with wild flowers and hedgerows. Venture into the town of La Orotava and stroll around what is home to some of Tenerife’s most attractive buildings, gardens and parks, and if you’re there in June, be sure not to the miss the Corpus Christi procession when the streets are paved with floral art!

At just over 4 hours’ flight from London, cheap holidays to Tenerife involve a short-haul flight that transports you to another world. You might not have booked tickets to Tenerife for mum this year, but put it on your to-do list anyway. Got any alternative plans for Mother’s Day? Tell us in the comments.
