The hubby and I have just had the most incredible fortnight in the Riviera Maya. We were having the perfect dream holiday from the moment we stepped off the plane. Our hotel, the Sandos Caracol Beach resort, was set upon the edge of a lush, exotic jungle. Its gardens, home to a plethora of wildlife, are simply stunning and are really well maintained. We saw lots of geckos and iguanas – they didn’t seem at all phased by tourists!
Our room overlooked the sparkling Caribbean sea, its views from our balcony were breathtaking. All the staff were ever so pleasant, helpful and they would do absolutely anything they could to make our stay the best it could possibly be. The maid service was great; it was such a lovely surprise to find fresh towel animals decorating our bed every other day. The restaurants are really good and there is a huge selection of food available. The Steakhouse and Mexican restaurants were our faves, and there are plenty of bars in resort so you’re never far from a cool bevvy.
The beach is incredible and was perfect for relaxing. It’s quite big, so we never felt crowded and we managed to find a secluded spot to ourselves. Remember to take a towel for the sun loungers! The sea is so warm and clear and colourful tropical fish swim around your ankles.
Swimming with dolphins at Delphinus was the highlight of our holiday. We’d both wanted to do this for years. The interaction with the dolphins is so intimate and they’re so well trained. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience I’ll never forget. It was such a rare opportunity. The photos and video you can purchase at the end is expensive but worth it.
The fire and drum show is a must see, the professional fire dancers and band are mesmerising to watch and it’s all set to music. What a great evening’s entertainment! Something a little different and traditional too!
My only niggle is that the resort was a fair stretch from towm and we needed a taxi to get anywhere. If you’re the kind of people who just want to relax on the beach though, this is perfect for you, and the resort has every amenity to keep you content. We enjoyed the entertainment programme, and there was a kids’ club and disco for the little ones. I would recommend this hotel for families rather than couples, as I felt this was their target clientele, though we still had the most beautiful holiday. We are looking forward to going back sometime in the future.
