Puerto Vallarta is a resort in Mexico located on the Pacific Ocean. People who visit this resort will experience a different type of holiday to Cancun as it doesn’t have the non-stop parties but what it does offer is a more traditional Mexican holiday, where you can get a real taste of Mexico.
So what is there to do here? More than you can imagine. Although the resort is known for its beautiful architecture, iconic sights and fascinating history, all of which have attracted visitors for years, there are plenty of other things to do in Puerto Vallarta too…
Canopy River Zip Line Tour
This company offers all kinds of fun adventures and activities for anyone who loves the outdoors. You can drive an ATV through the mountains or enjoy a mule ride, but our favourite activity is the zip line tours they offer. If you feel like having the ultimate adrenaline rush then we advise adding this into your holiday itinerary. There are twelve zip lines located in the rainforest of the Sierra Madre Mountains. You will be accompanied by experienced guides throughout your trip which lasts typically around four hours. Transportation is included and what is even better is that they offer free Tequila tasting at the end of the tour, presumably to calm the nerves. They also have a restaurant where you can enjoy traditional Mexican food , we are told they serve some really tasty nachos, to complete the tour.
Zona Romantica (Old Town)
This area is set away from the main hotels and has a traditional, relaxed ambience. It is very popular with visitors and we recommend you come here during your holiday. The best part of the day to experience Zona Romantica is in the evening when it is cooler, which will make browsing around the shops for your souvenirs so much more comfortable. They have plenty of restaurants and bars for you to refuel, or you may prefer to just take in the music that you will hear playing and be enjoy being entertained by the street shows.
If you want to mingle with the locals then this is the best place to be, as you will often find families gathering here to socialise. This is where you will find most of the main tourist attractions and although it is actually older than the old town, it has a more modern feel to it. By day you can watch the street artists and treat yourself to a refreshing ice cream whilst strolling along the promenade, by night this place is heaving with nightclubs and bars.
Playa Los Muertos Pier
This pier was renovated in January 2013 and is now one of the major attractions of the city. You can catch a water taxi here and visit other beaches. On a night the pier looks so pretty as it is illuminated by pretty coloured lights. You will also find shops here so you can enjoy some retail therapy or you can sit on one of the benches and people watch.
Puerto Vallarta Tours offer an awesome trip in a 4 passenger Jeep up into the Sierra Madre Mountains. You will visit a traditional Mexican hacienda and a tequila factory. The trip lasts approximately five hours and there will be time to swim and sunbathe and you won’t go hungry as there are plenty of Mexican snacks along the way. A jeep safari will offer you a fun activity whilst you are on holiday in Mexico.
This restaurant is a perfect choice for a special meal. The food here is amazing but we recommend trying the steak with one of the restaurants own sauces-it’s pretty special. You must make a reservation on their website first to eat here and it is not open to under 14’s. It is also worth noting that the Ocean Grill is only accessible by water taxi so might not be suitable for people with mobility difficulties. This could be the ideal setting for a perfect romantic meal.
Sunset Sailing On Banderas Bay
The sunsets here make the evening sailings one of the most romantic settings for a perfect date night, and an evening you won’t forget. And you don’t even need a to experience this with a partner, it has an adult vibe to it making it great for friends too. Memories are made of this.
A holiday to Puerto Vallarta involves a 12 hour 15 minute flight from the UK. As it sits on the same latitude as Hawaii the weather is often compared to it , so expect high temperatures year-round. The dry season is from November until May, but even in the wet season you can still experience plenty of sunshine. Because it is on the Pacific coast it doesn’t have a hurricane season like Cancun. We hope this guide can help you create a Mexican holiday to remember.
