What's the Weather Like in Kos?
If you’re looking for a Greek island escape, you’ll find that Kos is a tough one to beat for a winning combination of secluded retreats, active nights out, fine wines and great beaches.
It’s the sunshine that really draws the holidaymaking crowds, and whatever time of the year you visit, Kos is going to offer you blue skies and bright golden rays well worthy of your time.
That said, it’s a good idea to keep a few facts about the climate of Kos in mind ahead of your trip, and we’ve put a few pointers together for you.
Savour that sunshine
You’re probably already well aware that the sun in Kos is hot and plentiful, and you’re planning a holiday to the island for that very reason.
However, the full story is a little more nuanced than that. For example, although the weather is at its hottest in the summer months, it’s also when the beaches are at their most crowded and the popularity of Kos hits a premium.
Staying aware of the way the average summer flows in Kos can help you both beat the heat and outpace the crowds. Thermometers jump up a little as of June each year, when balmy averages of 25° are a mainstay, following the welcome upswing to 20° experienced by locals and holidaymakers alike in May.
Expect the mercury to continue rising through July and August, where days of 30° are all but expected, before dipping to a still-respectable average of 23° during September.
Indeed, it’s a far happier story than the unpredictable mix of summer rains and unseasonable murk that so often thwarts our summer plans back home, so it’s no surprise that people love Kos for their summer breaks. The fact that the days of June, July and August each tend to offer an average of 10 solid hours of sunshine with uninterrupted blue skies definitely helps on that front too.
Kos is a real winter warmer
If you’re concerned that seeking winter sun in Kos will leave you coming up short, you can be at ease.
The only month you may prefer to avoid is February, when average temperatures fall to around 10°. That’s still better than back home though, and because it’s such an off-peak time of year to book, you’ll likely snap up a brilliant bargain or two.
Elsewhere on the calendar, Kos is still sure to raise a smile. October musters a much appreciated annual average of 18°, with around 16° being the daily norm in November. Come December and the following January, you’re looking closer to 12°, while enjoying beaches more free from crowds and a quieter pace of holiday.
Come rain or shine
As far as this island is concerned, it’s dry almost every day from May to September, so you’ve nothing to fear from any unexpected showers. In fact, it’s as far to the opposite as you can imagine, but that means the precipitation in December and January make up the balance.
Expect around a cumulative two weeks’ rain on average in Kos in those months, of usually around 160 millimetres.
The good news is, beyond those months it’s very much business as usual in Kos, and that means fun in the sun free from worries. February, March and November in Kos tend to average around a week of rainfall each, although given their temperatures are so much better than back in Britain, it’s forgiveable to say the least.
