Waterparks in Crete

There are so many reasons to take a holiday to Crete, and as far as island breaks go, it's a firm favourite.

Whether you've a clan of little ones in tow or are just looking for a wet and wild day out with your nearest and dearest, both kids and big kids at heart will love Crete's waterparks. We've listed the pick of the bunch below to help get you up to speed.

Tucked up in the Anopolis Mountains, you'll need a coach ride, a cab ride or a transfer from your hotel to make it to Crete's biggest waterpark.

It's definitely worth doing, as Watercity blends both thrills and spills with some opportunities for rest and relaxation.

Wide open lawns and lazy river drifting rides mean that more laid-back visitors are able to catch some rays and explore the waterpark at their leisure, while daredevils can make a beeline for the kamikaze slide or the turbo cyclone chute.

Lockers and changing rooms ensure that you can alter outfits as required when making a splash.

To find this waterpark, which is free to enter, look no further than sunny and sensational Hersonissos. What makes this waterpark distinctive from others in Crete is its approach, as well as its amenities.

It's smaller than most, but popular nonetheless, thanks to its free entry and trio of swimming pools. While there are plenty of slides to enjoy, StarBeach also gets plenty of attention for its themed days, grand clubbing nights and even a spot of go karting.

If you're looking for a waterpark with a difference, this could well be the one for you.

Acqua Plus

At Acqua Plus you're going to find a pretty decent balance between the size of the park and the appeal of the rides on offer, meaning that you can spend a portion of the day here and still set out for other events in Hersonissos or thereabouts if you're pressed for time.

It's an affordable option too, and one that offers a superb amount of variety in its activities. While the usual fare of daring slides and twisting turning helter-skelters makes for plenty of splash-happy fun, you can also jog over the surface of the water in your own big transparent ball, or get stuck into some aquatic aerobics.

A good mix of snacks shacks and restaurants helps stave off hunger, and the slides here into the pools are wonderfully long, letting you race your loved ones down long lazy hills.

This waterpark avoids the mainstream tourism by being tucked away in a lush green region of Crete, just a few minutes' drive from Chania.

That said, it still boasts some of the best attractions around, with a massive rainbow slide to race down and fun themes in its facilities, such as half-pipe chutes with exteriors themed like the legs of an octopus.

This waterpark is one of the largest in Greece, let alone Crete, and packs the action with a peppering of shops and restaurants across 65,000 square metres.

As well as rubber tube rides down some winding hairpin courses, you can also see some elegantly tended gardens and take your ease in the more secluded river rafting routes that drift amid the scenery.

In fact, such is this waterpark's popularity that it's also often a go-to venue for birthday and even wedding parties. With such wide open spaces and top food to enjoy, it makes sense that special days out can be marked in style.
