Things to do with kids in Thassos

At first glance, Thassos might seem like a sleepy island – and for the most part, it is – but for just as many lazy afternoons on the beach, there are energetic activities that'll get you and your family a little closer to Thassos' history and culture.

You won't find an endless array of waterparks and mini golf courses, but that doesn't mean Thassos isn't family-friendly. Far from it. Ringed around the island are swaths of kid-friendly beaches with shallow, sheltered water, watersports and diving centres and historic sites that'll get little imaginations running wild.

If this Greek island is one of your next holiday stops, try these kid-approved activities on for size.

Check out the exhibits at the Thassos Town Museum of Archaeology

The Archaeological Museum in Thassos Town is one of the island's premier spots.

The museum features hundreds of historical objects and artefacts that illuminate Thassos' long-standing history as far back as the 7th century BCE. Wandering these halls is a great way to get little minds revving.

Inside, you'll find ancient statues and ceramics, busts and jewellery. There are even special tours for little ones designed specifically to get kids interested in the history on display.

Splash around at the beaches

Golden Beach – found in the resort of the same name – is undoubtedly one of the most popular beaches on the island, Blue Flag-certified and two and a half kilometres in length.

It's backed by restaurants and beach bars aplenty, so you won't have to venture far from your beach chair for afternoon nibbles. As for the water, it's nice and shallow, making it a safe place to paddle. Plus, there are watersports like windsurfing and kayaking on the horizon too, so you and the family only have to laze if you want to.

Potos is another resort famous for its shores, offering a mix of sand and pebbles. It's particularly popular in the summertime, boasting clear water that makes for excellent snorkelling potential. You'll also have cafes and shops at the back, keeping everything you need on a day out within reaching distance.

Wander through the acropolis in Thassos Town

The ancient city walls cutting along the coast of Thassos Town are just the gateway to this city's past. Head up the hillside and the door to its history opens even wider in the form of Roman ruins that'll give you an idea of what life might have looked like way back in the day.

Here, you'll find a Roman amphitheatre that could once accommodate 3,000 people, cave mouths, bits of former temples and the craggy remains of a castle. To bring them to life, all you need is a little imagination.

Hit the waves with watersports

Being an island and all, Thassos understandably comes with a collection of watersports on offer.

Adrenaline junkies and sun seekers alike can take to the waves on jet skis, banana boats, kayaks and tubes tethered to speedboats, plus, there are snorkelling and scuba diving opportunities too. There are watersports centres throughout Thassos, with particularly good facilities in Golden Beach and Potos.

Have a sweet treat at a honey factory

Thassos is famous for its honey – especially pine honey and a floral honey – so it's only right that you should stop by a local honey factory to see this sweet export made at the source. It's located between the villages of Skala Prinou and Skala Rachoni.

The factory is helmed by more than 100 beekeepers from across the island that are committed to making quality honey, and here, you can see the machines and raw products that lovingly go into each jar. You'll also have the chance to try honey straight from the comb, plus buy beeswax candles, sweets and of course honey jars.
