10 Things To Try For The First Time In Bavaro

Located in eastern Dominican Republic, the town of Bavaro provides a heady mix of cultural traditions and modern activities. We've put together a list of some of our favourite ways to spend sunny days down Bavaro ways, many of which you might never have tried before.

Make a splash in a speedboat

From Bavaro Beach, the opportunity to cruise like a rockstar over the Caribbean Sea is yours for the taking.

Hiring a speedboat for three hours gives you ample time to race over the waves with the wind in your hair and the ocean yours to command. Once you're out in the deep, slip on your snorkel and sink beneath the blue to meet the local fishy faces.

Take on the golf courses

Close to Bavaro are both the Cana Bay Golf Course to the north, and the larger southern Cocotal Golf & Country Club. Both venues offer fantastic opportunities for you to practice your swing or even try your hand at golfing for the first time. There's no golfing like the kind you get on the manicured courses of the Caribbean.

Visit the town that Hollywood forgot

An hour's drive from Bavaro is the very interesting town of Altos De Chavon. And we bet you've never been to a recreation of a 16th-century Mediterranean village built in the Caribbean in the 1970s before. It was constructed as a movie set by Paramount and has remained standing ever since. Go explore it for yourself to see fountain plazas and dine beside artist's studios.

Sail to Shark Island with the Caribbean Buccaneers

The Caribbean Buccaneers take you and your family back to yesteryear on their mighty ship Hispaniola. The adventure departs from Bavaro Beach in search of the fabled treasures promised by a treasure map, with rival pirates to engage in witty swordplay with on the way. Led by Captain Jack Black, the escapades include food, song, dance and of course the obligatory helping of rum.

Eat like a local

The foods unique to the Dominican Republic are some of the most scrumptious in the Caribbean, but you won't have tried many of them. Tostones are plantains deep-fried twice for a distinctive sweet, sticky flavour and mangu is a plantain mash that always goes down a treat. While on the savoury side, a good recommendation is the filling seven-meat stew that is sancocho.

Learn to dance the Merengue

A cultural folk dance that's been adapted over the years to become a fun, lively partner dance style, Merengue is the true embodiment of the passions of the Dominican Republic. While you're in Bavaro, you're bound to find the chance to try the simple yet dazzling steps for yourself, and the rich horns and infectious percussion of the music makes every Merengue evening lively.

Take the kids to meet the dinosaurs

Meeting a dinosaur doesn't happen every day, yet the Dino World region of Bavaro Adventure Park brings these ancient monsters to life with stunning detail, so you can catch a selfie with a Triceratops. Each beast, from the Tyrannosaurus Rex to the Stegosaurus, is backed up by facts about its diet and habits back in ages past.

Meet locals behind the finest arts and crafts

The true spirit of the Dominican people still rings through in the craftsmanship of the sidestreets and the plantations scattered throughout the countryside. The great part is, you're able to tour those plantations, as well as meet the men and women who weave baskets, paint stunning artworks and roll those classic cigars.

Get a view of the coastline from on high in a balloon

A hot air balloon trip to the clouds is just the ticket to help you get the lay of the land, as well as a pretty sublime way of soaking up the scenery of Punta Cana, the area surrounding Bavaro. Huge baskets tucked under big, colourful hot air balloons offer plenty of room for you and the rest of the family.

Embrace your inner adventurer on horseback and zipline

The Bavaro area is a brilliant place due to its natural surroundings, which are great fun to ride through on horseback, enjoy via eco-safari 4x4 truck ride, or even zipline over the top. The spirit of exploration burns brightest in these parts of the island, so it's no wonder that smiles are so easily found in Bavaro. Everyone's on their own adventure, what will yours involve?
