Only three and a half hours stand between you and your last minute holiday to wintery Lapland.
When Christmas carollers sing about winter wonderlands, we’re pretty sure they’re talking about Lapland. That’s because this northern – as in, Arctic Circle northern – region of Finland is almost always blanketed in a layer of snow, and is the official home base for none other than Santa Claus.
There are real life reindeer, dogsled excursions and meet-and-greets with the jolly man himself. What’s more, Lapland’s best natural features are something you can’t predict – we’re talking about the Northern Lights, of course. Rock up between October and May, and you’ve got a good chance of spotting these glittering beauties.
If you’re booking last minute, Lapland’s capital Rovaniemi is a great place to start in terms of activities. It’s Santa Claus central, featuring the Santa Claus Village where elves, reindeer and Father Christmas reside.
Snow adventures are the name of the game in Levi, where you’ll find a ski resort, the Luvattumaa ice gallery and go-karting on ice. But for a step inside Lapland’s nature, there’s the Urho Kekkonen National Park in Saariselka. Cross country skiing is big here, as are Northern Lights hunts and reindeer rides through the snow.
The best time of year to book your last minute holiday
In order to secure the best last minute deals, you’ll want to hold out until at least eight weeks before your preferred holiday date. While Lapland technically sees a steady stream of snow from October to May, high season here is undoubtedly Christmas, so you’ll want to keep your eyes peeled starting in October if you’d like to visit in December.
