Family-friendly beaches in St Lucia

Choose to spend your family holiday doing as little or as much as you desire on one of St Lucia's picture-perfect beaches. With a selection of family-friendly sandy spots, this island really does leave you spoilt for choice.

Serving up a two kilometre stretch of sand, Reduit Beach in Rodney Bay is one of the most popular with families. Its gentle waters make a fantastic snorkelling spot whilst the lines of water sport companies make sure you're never left bored. One thing that's guaranteed to be a winner with the kids is the inflatable playground, Splash Island Water Park.

Head further north and you'll find the Pigeon Island beach. Located in the 40-acre National Park, you won't be short on adventure here. For the adults there's the remains of Admiral Rodney's naval base to explore, for the kids there's the legendary pirate's cave. If you're an active bunch, there's the option to climb up to the top of the islands fort for spectacular views. Or if you just want to sunbathe, there's plenty of space for that too.

For an area that feels exclusive to just you and the family, there's Vigie Beach. Despite being located near the airport in Castries, this sandy stretch has very few hotels and resorts making it the perfect, quiet spot for a chilled day out. Being well sheltered means sunbathing isn't disturbed by any unruly winds, whilst its border of trees offers plenty of shade for the kids. Plus, it's within close proximity to Castries, so you don't have to venture far for refreshments.

St Lucia family activities

When you see just how clear the waters surrounding its tropical isles are, you'll realise exactly why St Lucia is a snorkelling hotspot. Anse Chastanet Beach in particular has a marine reserve off its shores and makes an excellent scuba diving space. If you and the little ones love to explore, keep your eyes peeled for its artificial reefs that have formed around shipwrecks. Snorkelling isn't the only water fun you'll find here, thanks to the easterly winds it's a great spot for windsurfing too.

It's not all about water-based fun though, there's plenty to keep the family occupied in land. Switch walking for wheels and witness the island and all of its beauty on a LucianStyle Segway Tour — a tour that involves no walking means the little ones won't get too tired. If you don't want neither walking or wheels then opt for swings at the Treetop Adventure Park, a fantastic activity for all of the family.

The kids may be off school but it doesn't mean that they can't keep up the learning and at Morne Fortune they can do exactly that. Head up to this magnificent hill and take in views of St Lucia island before reliving its history through its cannons, fortress walls and military fortifications, all of which tell many tales of the past.

Other family holiday destinations

Between them, the Caribbean islands rack up some spectacular stretches of sand, action-packed rainforests and enough water sports to keep you and the children occupied for weeks. Favourite family hotspots include Jamaica and the Dominican Republic, both reachable in 9.5 hours from the UK.

If you'd prefer something that's within closer reach, there's the Cape Verde Islands. Thanks to its year-round sunshine, endless miles of beaches and close proximity to the UK, it's a top spot for families. Touch down in one of its main resorts Boa Vista or Sal in just 6 hours.
