Montenegro Cheap Holidays

A cheap Montenegro break provides scenic towns and attractive beaches

With a flight time of under three hours and plenty of affordable accommodation, Montenegro is a popular choice with budget-seeking holidaymakers.

The Budva region in the south of Montenegro has 320 kilometres of coastline and offers picture-perfect scenery of pine woods, craggy canyons and terracotta towns. The resort of the same name, Budva has an old town that’s crossed with narrow streets and squares, a medieval stone citadel and a smart harbour. It represents a treasure chest of cultural heritage and a creative centre for local and international artists. Many say Montenegro can be a cheaper alternative to Croatia – but just as interesting and spectacular.

Also part of the Budva Riviera is the sleepy town of Petrovac. Surrounded by mountains, it nestles in the shade of a 16th-century Venetian fortress, which guards a tiny stone harbour and is home to the Museum of Roman Mosaics. Its promenade is lined with pine and palm trees and stretches along the 600-metre beach, well-known for its fine reddish sand.

Just across the bay from Budva, is the three-kilometre sand and pebble beach of Becici. With its backdrop of pine-clad hills and local restaurants and craft shops lining the promenade, it has a more relaxed vibe. Or you could stay at the traditional fishermen’s island of Sveti Stefan, which is now a world-famous location on one of the most picturesque coastal areas of the Adriatic. A fortified island village connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway, its 15th-century stone villas overlooking the pink-sand beach and turquoise waters have made it one of Montenegro’s most photographed sites.

Cheap days out in Montenegro

Boating and watersports are hugely popular activities in Montenegro. Budva offers opportunities for parasailing, jet-ski trips and banana boats as well as some of the best beaches in the area, including Jaz Beach and Milocer Beach, where you can simply unwind.

Just an hour’s drive from Becici lie the Lovcen Mountains, reaching 1,729 metres high. If you can brave a trip to their summit, you’ll be rewarded with remarkable views of national parkland. Also easily accessible from Becici is Lake Skadar, a protected national park surrounded by dramatic mountains. It’s a birdwatcher’s paradise with over 260 different species and the mountains are home to wild tortoises, coloured lizards and amphibians. Another national park well worth a visit and accessible by local bus is Biogradska Gora. Its diversity of flora and fauna spans 220 different plants and 150 species of bird, as well as untouched forests and glacier lakes.

About 33 kilometres from Budva, the underground world of the Lipa Cave is a unique experience. An extensive cave network with two and a half kilometres of passages and halls to explore on foot or via train, it houses underground streams, lakes and springs.

One of the most famous cities in Montenegro, Kotor, is well-known for its fjord-like scenery and mountainous bay. The Old City of Kotor is well-preserved with medieval architecture and numerous monuments of cultural heritage. Its buildings, with their terracotta-coloured rooftops huddle together and are criss-crossed with narrow streets and squares.
