You'll be in Italy in no time, as it's only a two and a half hour flight before you're by the pool or sightseeing.

The famous city of Rome, or the eternal city as it's also known, has a wealth of treasures to explore, offering an array of dining options and selection of budget hotels. The city is packed with famous sites from Vatican City to the impressive Colosseum.

Temperatures in Italy will vary according to exactly where you travel to, but late spring and early autumn are popular months to visit for mild temperatures and cheaper holiday prices than in the height of summer. Temperatures in the Venetian Riviera range from 22°C to around 28°C in July. Further south in the Neapolitan Riviera temperatures sizzle, with May and October averages of around 20°C, sometimes soaring up to 30°C in summer. Cities such as Rome are also hottest in July, when it averages 26°C but often gets much hotter.

For stunning seaside scenery, the Neapolitan Riviera provides both rural landscapes and cultural pursuits with beaches aplenty and historic sites to investigate at nearby Pompeii. The city of Naples offers art galleries and museums to browse as well as having some fabulous dining opportunities, serving everything from authentic pizzas to gourmet dining.

The Venetian Riviera is where you can have a classic Italian break with sun drenched beaches and the floating city of Venice to explore. With money saved booking an inexpensive holiday it's worth splashing out on a gondola ride for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Cheap days out in Italy

Visitors to Rome won't have far to go before they bump into an iconic site. Days can be spent just wandering the beautiful streets at your leisure searching for landmarks such as the famous Trevi Fountain, St Peter's Square and St Peter's Basilica. For window shopping and people watching head to the Spanish Steps or hang out on the elegant Piazza Navona.

The Neapolitan Riviera has heaps of sightseeing potential too, with the Amalfi Coast dotted with ancient castles, gardens and churches. In Naples, there's a host of inexpensive things to do – exploring the historic centre is a day trip in itself and a look around Duomo, the main cathedral, is highly recommended.

Visitors to the Venetian Riviera can enjoy the stunning beaches of Lido di Jesolo and its lively centre. On Friday, the old quarter hosts a bustling market with around 200 stalls to browse. And nearby Venice has splendid examples of Gothic, Baroque and Renaissance architecture, for example you can step inside St Mark's Basilica to gaze at the intricate artwork on the ceilings away from the heat of the sun.
