Watch the boats go by
Skala Prinos is an area of pine-covered mountains set against the clear blue ocean. Besides a few hotels and apartments on the seafront, it remains untouched by fellow tourists enjoying holidays to Thassos. This authentic village makes for a stress-free resort with the added bonus of experiencing traditional, rural life.
Spend your days relaxing on the beautiful white coastline taking advantage of the beachside tavernas or take a stroll down to the port and watch all manner of sea vessels being repaired, or wooden boats being made by hand, in one of the last traditional shipyards of Greece.
During the day there are beautiful areas of nature to discover which can be explored on foot, bike or horseback. Hiring a car is a great option if you want to see the entire island, which can be looped in around a day. Skala Prinos also holds a local market each week selling local delicacies and crafts.
Evenings in Skala Prinos will see you enjoying leisurely dinners at local tavernas where you can sample authentic Greek cooking and taste exquisite local produce. The resort offers a couple of small bars but this certainly isn’t the place to be partying from dusk till dawn. For late nights out, Thassos Town offers a good selection of cocktail bars, as does the coastal town of Skala Potamias.
Dasylio Beach
The beautiful Blue Flag-certified beach at Skala Prinos is nestled next to a small forest full of pine trees, reaching down to the sand. The clear water and white sand, equipped with sunloungers and umbrellas, offer the perfect setting to relax and bathe in the glorious Mediterranean sunshine. The shallow, calm sea is perfect for paddling and, if you’re lucky, you might even spot the odd dolphin jumping across the water on the horizon.
Canoeing and volleyball are available as well as a centre offering diving, beach tennis and a range of boat trips. For a larger selection of watersports the most famous stretch of sand on Thassos, Golden Beach, is a 20-minute walk down the coast.
Enjoy a Greek feast
Greece holidays are all about sampling the local flavours, and what Skala Prinos lacks in quantity it certainly makes up for in quality. With a mere handful of tavernas to choose from, expect real Greek food, warm welcomes and authentic atmosphere. Sit back with the locals and taste island specialities including peppered cabbage, stuffed zucchini flowers and bouyardi – a dish made with feta, tomatoes and lashings of olive oil.
Enjoy a meal at The Nest, perched on a side street near the harbour, which claims to be the only place that barbecues its meat the traditional way.
Day out in the capital
If history is your thing, jump on a bus to Thassos Town and explore the ancient sites. You can enjoy fantastic, panoramic views of the island from the amphitheatre and acropolis or take a wander around the town’s artefact-rich museum. Just outside of town are several ruins, featuring time-worn structures dedicated to Zeus and Hercules.
Mountain biking
Get off the beaten track and explore this olive and pine-covered island by bike. Heading off down one of the coastal trails, you’ll cut through olive groves and woodland that surround the village for a real taste of rural life.
Alternatively, head inland and tackle the mountains and valleys, passing quaint buildings, charming villages and ancient ruins, seemingly a world away from your tourist resort.
Explore on horseback
Skala Prinos is home to Thassos Horse Club which offers visitors of all levels the opportunity to explore the island by horse. Choose between a half or full day trek and you’ll soon be exploring off-road mountain trails, wading through the shallow waters along the coast and enjoying being at one with the nature of the island.
