Walt Disney World Resort

Things to do in the Walt Disney World Resort

The Walt Disney World Resort is without a doubt the ultimate family holiday destination. Packed into four theme parks, two waterparks and a cosmopolitan downtown area are everyone's favourite movie characters, heart-racing rides and more name brand shopping than you'll know what to do with. When you visit this corner of Florida you can expect it to be all Disney, all the time. Here's just some of what you won't want to miss.

Watch fireworks over Cinderella's Castle

Each night the sky above Cinderella's Castle in the Magic Kingdom comes to life with a brilliant fireworks display and a visit from Tinkerbell herself. The nostalgia-heavy 'When You Wish Upon a Star' fills the speakers as favourite characters like Jiminy Cricket, Cinderella and Peter Pan make appearances. Maleficent and other Disney bad guys step in and so goes the age-old story of good versus evil, unfolding this time in the sky.

Whoosh down the waterslides at Disney's Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach

The Walt Disney World Resort is privy to not one but two waterparks within its borders. They may both fall under the Disney umbrella, but they couldn't be more different. Typhoon Lagoon is a tropical paradise while Blizzard Beach is, as the name suggests, a winter wonderland cut with water slides and frosty pools. It's all in good fun though, as nothing gets too cold in Florida.

In both parks you'll have your pick of sky-high waterslides, wave pools, tube slides and a lazy river. Rest assured there are sunbeds and umbrellas for the less energy-inclined, plus snack shacks where you can pick up a quick bite.

Set off on safari at the Animal Kingdom

A little slice of the wild is tucked away in the Animal Kingdom, where giraffes and elephants roam amid lush groves of trees. There are many different ways to view these exotic creatures when you're on a family holiday to Disney World – spot them via an open-air vehicle, out on a nocturnal safari or by a private tour.

Within the Animal Kingdom you can embark on a safari through African savannah-like plains, visit the exotic bird sanctuary and watch parrots, toucans and owls take flight. You can even part the trees and wander through a terrain modelled after Southeast Asia, where tigers and komodo dragons await.

Meet the princesses in their native countries at Epcot

You can meet and greet Disney's much-loved princesses in the Magic Kingdom, but there's nothing quite like seeing them with the backdrop of their native countries behind. Disney's Epcot takes little corners of the world and brings them to life in one park. And now, the princesses have arrived.

Snow White waits beside her wishing well in Germany while Mulan stands guard in China. You'll find Belle wandering the streets of France, while over in Norway Anna and Elsa from Frozen give warm welcomes from the Royal Sommerhus.

Free-fall on The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror

Dominating the skyline of Disney's Hollywood Studios is The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, a 1930s-style hotel that's been known to attract a ghost or two. You'll wind through the hotel's abandoned halls before taking the massive elevator to the 13th floor, where five guests mysteriously disappeared in 1939. From there, it's all downhill – literally. The elevator free-falls 13 floors, taking you along for the ride.

Indulge in retail therapy at Disney Springs

Disney Springs is the Walt Disney World Resort's retail hub, featuring everything from Disney-themed stores to big brand designers, fashion jewellery, artwork, wine and sweets. It's the ultimate spot to pick up a souvenir without having to brave the gift shops in the parks. You'll also find the Lego Store, brimming with Disney-themed characters and bricks, plus the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique where little ones can get a magical makeover.
