Buenavista del Norte is located on the north-westerly tip of Tenerife – one of the most picturesque parts of the island. It was established by the Spanish conquistadores hundreds of years ago – their name for it, Buenavista del Norte, means ‘good view of the North.’
It would be hard not to be captivated by what you see here. You’ll find a charming town of brightly-coloured houses and honey-coloured churches, surrounded by terraced fields and the craggy Teno Mountains. Rugged coastline stretches out on either side of the town, lapped by cobalt blue seas.

Head to the historic quarter of nearby Icod de los Vinos to shop for handmade souvenirs, like figurines and soaps. Meanwhile, in Buenavista del Norte, there are several small boutiques where you can buy artisanal foods and locally-made souvenirs.
There are several restaurants in the town, each serving delicious local cuisine. Tuck into freshly-caught seafood with papas arrugadas (potatoes cooked in salt-water) and a chili-garlic sauce, mojo rojo. If you head to the main plaza you’ll find al fresco restaurants serving tapas and local wine.
A place untouched by time

While you’re here, have a go at watersports such as sailing, stand-up paddle-boarding and kayaking. One of the best spots for watersports is south of Buenavista del Norte, in view of the huge Los Gigantes cliffs. You may even get a glimpse of dolphins and whales while you’re there.
Explore the rugged landscape
There’s a lot to see and do in the surrounding region. Take a 20-minute drive to Punto Teno, a rugged peninsula with a lighthouse at the tip. Here, on the most westerly point of the island, you have fabulous views of Los Gigantes and the vast ocean around you.
To really get away from it all, head to Masca, a tiny village that was only accessible on foot or by donkey until recently. It’s surrounded by a plunging ravine leading down to a secluded cove with calm, lagoon-like waters.
There’s also an intriguing local museum, and you’ll find craftsmen working near the tiny church, as well as weavers and painters. This is a great spot for purchasing souvenirs, alongside local produce like handmade chutneys. It’s also the ideal starting point for enjoying some wonderful hikes.
