Tourlos holidays

Just two kilometres north of the capital city in Mykonos is this sleepy resort village. Tourlos is a quiet destination with traditional white Greek buildings and a long, thin stretch of sand that runs parallel to the resort. The newly-developed commercial port and public yacht harbour bring in a flood of daily cruise ships that dock in the waters. This influx of visitors has helped Tourlos build an upmarket marina where you’ll find plenty of spots to eat and take in the views.

Tourlos is the ideal holiday spot for anyone who wants to be near the capital of Mykonos Town, but stay in accommodation far enough away to enjoy some peace and tranquillity. Tourlos is also just a 15-minute drive from the airport, making this an easy destination to get to after a busy day of flying. You’ll find plenty of hotels in this area, many of them at much more affordable prices than the ones in the neighbouring city of Mykonos Town.

Streaks of golden sand

The beach in Tourlos runs along the length of the resort and boasts soft, golden sands. This beach is completely unspoilt meaning you won’t find any sunloungers or parasols to rent. Instead you’ll find lots of open space for your own beach towel and room for children to build sandcastle fortresses. If your stomach is starting to grumble, this beach does have numerous spots for a bite to eat including ice cream parlours and seafood restaurants.

If you’re looking to practice your watersports during your holidays to Greece, Agios Stefanos Beach is just a 10-minute walk away. Sunloungers and parasols are available to hire here and you can have your pick of watersports from snorkelling to kite surfing. There are even jet skis available to rent.

Seaside dining

The best places to dine in Tourlos are all along the resort’s harbour. Here you’ll get epic views of the setting sun over the Aegean Sea as you sit outside on one of the patios or outdoor gardens. The influx of tourists to this area and cruise ship visits has helped Tourlos grow their restaurant scene. Strolling along the harbour area you’ll run into several Greek tavernas dotted along the path as well as coffee shops and ice cream parlours. Being a port town, Tourlos is big on seafood and several of the eateries serve a fresh catch of the day including lobster and swordfish.

Sail the Aegean sea

One of the best ways to see the sites in Mykonos is by boat. This harbour resort offers several trips to nearby beaches and islands. By joining one of the yachting tours or smaller boat trips you can venture from place to place at a much quicker pace than driving. One of the most popular trips is to the island of Delos, just one hour away. This historic island is full of ruins and columns as well as mosaic-covered temples. Any Greek mythology buffs out there will be interested to know that Delos is said to be the birth place of Apollo and Artemis.

Quiet drinks on the harbour

Nightlife in Tourlos is on the quiet side, focused mainly on peaceful evening walks by the beach and glasses of wine under the stars. There are a few bars and Greek tavernas open late serving cocktails and beers, but most of your evening entertainment on Mykonos holidays here will come from the hotels. For a much more lively nightlife experience you can head to the capital city of Mykonos Town.

Capital city on your doorstep

If you’d like to visit a few extra destinations on a cheap holiday to Mykonos, know that the thriving cultural hotspot of Mykonos Town is only two kilometres away, or a 15-minute drive. It’s even within walking distance for those eager to enjoy the outdoors. Mykonos Town is known for its historic windmills that keep watch over the city as well as its churches and lighthouse.

Numerous buildings and restaurants have been built up at sea level in Mykonos Town, giving this city the nickname of Little Venice. There are over 150 restaurants to choose from here as well as a massive shopping scene. For some of the best shopping head to Matoyianni Street where you’ll find clothing, jewellery and souvenir shops as well as interesting art galleries and craft stores.
