A trio of beaches

The village itself has a semi-rural feel, with hotels and restaurants spread out enough to give everyone plenty of breathing room. The main attractions within walking distance are the three excellent sandy beaches – Ai Helis, Ammes and Avithos.

Svoronata is a great base for exploring the beautiful countryside and coast of this major Greek island. For nightlife and shopping tourists should head to the nearby capital of Argostoli.

  • A semi-rural village

    There’s no particular centre to Svoronata. Instead, hotels, shops and restaurants are spread out, making it feel like a lovely semi-rural holiday hotspots.

    There are many delightful tavernas and cafes you can enjoy at your leisure. The mini markets, car hire facilities and bars are largely located along the road that leads towards Ammes and Ai Helis beaches. There is also a go-karting track reached from the main road into the village, and open most evenings. For museums, late night entertainment and proper shopping though, you can simply to pop up to Argostoli.

    Three beaches nearby

    Svoronata has three excellent beaches to choose from, all within around a 35-minute walk of the village depending on where you are staying. The most picturesque is Ai Helis Beach with its fine sand and large cliff-like headland. Popular with holidaymakers yet retaining an air of solitude, the beach has sunloungers, umbrellas, a volleyball net and snack bars.

    Ammes Beach is the quietest in the area but still provides sunbed and parasol rentals. It has warm shallow waters brilliant for families,just be aware of the rocky formations that lurk in the waters to the sides of the bay.

    Finally, Avithos beach is similar to the others but offers great views of the tiny islet of Dias and the small church that stands on top. It’s a Blue Flag beach that is largely used by tourists from the nearby hotel.

    Orange grove dining

    Svoronata has a number of excellent seafood and Greek restaurants. Try the family-run Dum Spiros Spiro for the finest homemade Greek cuisine in the area served by welcoming staff or dine in the glorious orange grove at Esperides. Oranges and lemons are in plentiful supply on the island so it’s easy to top up your vitamin C alongside those vitamin D rays.

    It’s important to remember that the village is small, so many tavernas close over the winter. At these times the nearby capital of Argostoli can plug the gap, also being the go-to spot for lively nightlife all year round.
