Stansted Airport was opened in 1943 when it was used by the USAF during World War Two. After the war the site was transferred to the Air Ministry and it was not until 20 years later in 1966 that it became a civil airport. The first terminal building was opened in 1969 and expanded the following year to cope with the increase in passengers. Further development at Stansted Airport began in 1984 with the expansion of the airfield and terminal increasing its capacity to 15 million passengers a year. In the last 10 years there has been a huge increase in passengers from 12 million in 2000 to 21.9 million in 2005. London Stansted Airport is now the 4th busiest Airport in the UK.
Stansted Airport is located approximately 40 miles north east of the capital and just 2 miles outside of Bishop Stortford. There is access via the M11, M25 and the A120. Stansted Airport has its own station, with links to London’s Liverpool Street station every 15 minutes. There are regular coach services from London and local towns and cities to the airport.
