One of the first things that you’ll notice on holidays to Skiathos is the lush, green scenery that greets you as soon as you step off the plane. Pine forests cover large parts of the island and they roll right down to the edges of many of the beaches giving the island a distinctly tropical feel.
Speaking of beaches, you’re spoilt for choice here with over 60 to choose from many of which have been accredited Blue Flag status making holidays to Skiathos perfect for families.
Water sports can be tried from most of the busier resorts, or jump aboard a water taxi and explore the island from the sea, discovering secluded coves along the way.
Walkers and hikers can appreciate a Skiathos holiday just as much as those looking for a family beach holiday with hundreds of trails leading through the island and along the coast. You’ll come across villages that appear to have stood still in time but you’ll always be assured of a warm Greek welcome.
For such a small island it has a lot to offer, besides the water sports and hiking you can enjoy sailing, scuba diving, cycling, and horse riding along with tennis, football, volleyball and basketball.
Skiathos holidays can involve some interesting historical sites too with a short excursion to the north of the island and the ruined city of Kastro. The Evangelistria monastery, set in the hills surrounded by pine and cypress trees is in a beautiful and dramatic location and a nice place to take a stroll and soak up the atmosphere of Skiathos.
Wherever you stay on the island, try to fit in a trip to Skiathos Town with its cosmopolitan shops and busy marina. The seafood restaurants here offer excellent menus and the nightlife is probably the liveliest on the island.
Did you know? Despite the official population of this island being around 5,000, during the peak summer months, the number of people on the island at any one time can swell to over 50,000! Better get your towel out early!
