Salzburg is located on the Northern boundary of the Alps and sits on the River Salzach. The name Salzburg literally means “Salt Castle”, deriving its name from barges that carried salt on the River Salzach during the 8th century. Popular during winter and summer, Salzburg has a rich cultural history with the old town or “Altstad” being designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997 with its abundance of baroque architecture.
