History And Directions For Prestwick Airport

Prestwick Airport (Glasgow Prestwick Airport) was opened in 1934 and by the time of the Second World War had become a major airport under the lend lease programme with some 300 aircraft a day passing through! A highlight in 1960 was the one and only visit to UK shores by Elvis Presley en route to Germany where he was stationed. Prestwick airport faced an uncertain future in the early 90s but the second half of the decade saw the expansion of the airport, building its own rail link on the existing Glasgow – Ayr route and the rise of no frills, cheap flight airlines using Prestwick as a base.

Prestwick Airport is located 0.7 miles from the town centre with access from the A79, whether travelling north or south the best approach is to use the A77 with its links to the A79. There is a rail service from Glasgow Central to Prestwick, also connections from Glasgow include London Euston and Edinburgh Waverly. The regular bus service from airport to Glasgow is the X77.
