History And Directions For Luton Airport

Luton Airport opened in 1938, initially as a northern terminal for London. During the war it was used as an RAF base, reverting back to a civilian airport in 1952. The rise in popularity of the “package holiday” in the 1960s saw terrific growth and development at Luton airport and by 1972 it had become the UK’s most profitable airport. Continued investment and expansion over the last 25 years has seen the airport change its name to the now familiar London Luton Airport and now handles 9.4 million passengers a year.

London Luton Airport is located 3 miles east of Luton city centre with access via the M25, M1 and the A1. Luton Airport Parkway railway stations are connected to the terminal by a free shuttle bus. There are regular coach services from London and surrounding cities to the airport.
