The Destination
Perhaps the most significant reason for Corralejo’s popularity is its fantastic stretch of beach and the beautifully clear sea that lies beyond it, awaiting you on All Inclusive Fuerteventura holidays. All the boxes are ticked here – clear blue waters, pristine sand and dunes that stretch out for miles. There are good reasons behind the tourist boom that Corralejo has enjoyed.
As well as the beaches, there are also other kinds of natural beauty to be found in Corralejo and the surrounding area. Corralejo sits on the northern tip of Fuerteventura and looks upon the island of Los Lobos, a calm and beautiful refuge full of interesting plant and animal life.
Corralejo belongs to the municipality of La Olivia, which is home to an enormous nature park defined by its mountainous, volcanic landscape and the unique species of animals living there. Despite its humble origins, Corralejo is now the most popular tourist destination on the island of Fuerteventura, and offers a variety of experience to suit holidaymakers of all ages and expectations.
Beaches in Corralejo
The most impressive beaches near Corralejo can be found just south of the town in the Parque Natural de Corralejo. Shuttle buses run from most hotels, but a short bike ride will also get you there, and it’s not too much of a walk if you’re feeling adventurous.
Once you arrive you’ll be treated to some of the most picture-perfect places in Europe. Large stretches of sand are broken up by circles of volcanic rock and isolated, private coves – where sometimes you’ll find naturists doing their thing. The water is always warm and unbelievably clean, and on the clearest of days you can look out over the Atlantic and see the mountains of Lanzarote in the distance.
As well as being a beautiful place to relax and unwind, the beaches of Corralejo are also home to lots of water-based activities, including sports fishing and wind surfing. If you’re looking to be active, or perhaps to try something new, then you’ll find lots of exciting things to fill your day.
The town
The town of Corralejo itself is an interesting mix of modern and traditional. In the 1970s people discovered the potential for Corralejo to be the popular destination it is now, so a fairly small and quiet fishing town started to grow at an extraordinary rate. This means that old Canarian architecture sits alongside modern hotels and apartment complexes, and things are still changing all the time.
However, one thing remains the same – the Atlantic Ocean. Even in the most tourist-orientated areas of the town the restaurants still serve fish freshly caught by locals and even though things have greatly expanded, life here tends to revolve around the beach and the sea.
Food and drink
Corralejo is a large and well developed resort, so you can expect an excellent choice of places to eat and drink if you’re visiting during holidays in Fuerteventura. Most of the world’s cuisines are represented and if you wander down the main street you’ll find a mixture of family-friendly places as well as small, intimate spots ideal for a candlelit dinner for two.
Lots of restaurants in Corralejo are also excellent places to drink and socialise, so you can enjoy your meal and then relax and see where the evening takes you. Drinking options range from traditional Irish pubs to cocktail bars, so you’ll always find somewhere to suit your mood.
Nightlife
Fuerteventura is known for being quieter than its neighbours, and nightlife in Corralejo tends to reflect this fact. You won’t find Ibiza-style club nights with places open until six in the morning. However, like Spain and the other Canary Islands, bars and restaurants tend to be open later than back home, so it’s normal to stay up and enjoy another cocktail long after a closing time you might expect.
Although Corralejo doesn’t have much of a clubbing scene, you’ll still find lots opportunities for dancing and live music. Big hotels in Corralejo usually have exciting entertainment lined up and if you head to the main strip you’ll find karaoke, cabaret and bars serving cold fruity drinks until late.
Corralejo history
Corralejo has vastly developed over the years but, the history of this once fishing village is still around today. The north of Fuerteventura is home to some of the richest archaeological heritage of the island and if you’ve had enough of the beach then you can spend a day exploring the things left behind by the island’s ancient inhabitants.
Close to Corralejo are impressive rock carvings and cave dwellings, all surrounded by stunning protected landscapes just waiting to be discovered.
