In April, we’re focusing on one of our favourite holiday destinations in the Mediterranean: Greece. A place filled with cobblestone streets and flat-roofed, whitewashed houses, it’s a charming and relaxing place in which to be on holiday. Wandering along the olive groves beside Parga Lichnos Beach at sunset is something everyone should aim to do at least once.
Greece is an odd-shaped peninsular with two extra pieces of land projecting from it – these are the Halkidiki in the north and the Peloponnese in the south. The Greek islands are also popular places situated in the west (the Ionian Islands) and to the east and south (the Aegean and Saronic islands), although there are many islets and rocks clustered around the mainland.
But the islands are also equipped with large, luxury hotels complete with great facilities that are accessible via two international airports, and the beachfronts are packed with some of the best clubs, bars, cafes and restaurants in the world. And there’s plenty to see and do besides enjoying a cocktail on the beach, from painting and photographing the incredible white houses in Oia in Santorini to windsurfing in Naxos to hiking the Corfu Trail.
As if you need another reason to visit Greece, ancient history is something that permeates the landscape, culture and attractions – even today. In the ‘land of temples’, there remains evidence of the Minoans, which was an ancient civilisation living in the area as early as 2,500 BC. Skilled in jewellery and ceramics, they even developed a system of writing and many believe they inspired Greek architecture and pottery making.
Visitors to Greece encounter religious icons like Zeus and Aphrodite, ancient heroes like Alexander the Great and Pelopidas, philosophers, mathematicians and writers. From Corfu in the north west to Rhodes in the south east, there are hundreds of holiday resorts and villages that provide unforgettable holidays. Like the Greek philosopher, Epicurus, wrote, “It’s not what we have but what we enjoy that constitutes our abundance.” – Welcome to Greece!https://plus.google.com/109738962732526564434/
