Berlin is the capital of Germany and regained this status after the reunification of the country in 1990. It is the countries largest city and dates back to the 13th century. Berlin is located in Eastern Germany approximately 70 km from the Polish border and is divided by two rivers namely the Spree and the Havel. The city is a major centre for European politics, culture and science. Berlin is home to the German Parliament and seat of the President, it is the third most popular city break destination in the European Union. The city has four universities and a high concentration of research institutions. There are also 153 museums to visit with Museum Island a declared UNESCO World Heritage site and the city also listed as a UNESCO City of Design. Berlin has a vibrant nightlife and is the centre of the European DJ culture with plenty of nightclubs including the infamous KitKatclub. There are many different music festivals ranging from punk to techno and classical to jazz.
