Quiet, relaxed pace and selection of beaches

If you’re looking for a Greek island holiday, Argostoli is ideal for a friendly, laid-back pace where you can find your own peaceful spot to relax with friends or family. It’s also got plenty of things to see and do between relaxing on your seaside days.

Good shopping and things to see

The town offers a gentle hum of activity and friendly feel, retaining many of its original narrow, cobbled streets and traditional architecture. An earthquake in 1953 destroyed some of the older buildings, but it has several beautiful examples of Venetian architecture to admire. The harbour is still active, so you get a lively flow of people visiting and taking day trips at the ferry port.

In Kanabas Square you can climb the bell-tower for a terrific view across the area and along the coastline. You can also stop off in the cafe to buy locally made food and sweets. There’s a good selection of shops for essentials, gifts and souvenirs which stay open late three nights a week – Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. So you can browse when it’s a bit cooler, like the locals do.

Excellent choice of restaurants

Argostoli is well known for excellent local cuisine, with many restaurants highly regarded for their delicious menus. As well as international cuisine, you’ll find really tasty traditional Greek dishes, including specialities such as kleftiko, souvlaki and moussaka.

There are lots of interesting places to eat around the town’s squares and the harbour, where you can stop off for just a drink and a quick snack, a long, lazy lunch or a relaxed evening dinner.

Lively nightlife to enjoy

Plateia Valianou square is where you’ll find the lively hub of Argostoli nightlife. This is where the locals go to have fun in the evenings, so it’s got a lively, fun atmosphere.

There’s a good selection of pubs, bars and clubs where you can have a quiet few drinks or have a loud, fun night out. Some of them offer live music too – so you can just enjoy yourself having a listen, or dance and party the night away.

Daytime activities

There are plenty of things to see and do around the town during the day while you’re in Argostoli. Several beaches make up the seafront in town, and stretch further along the coastline. Here, you can take your beach towel and sun cream and completely unwind to the sound of the waves.

You can take a short ferry trip across to Lixouri where you can look back to Argostoli harbour and its picturesque position backed by wooded mountains. In Lixouri, you can also see the famous waterwheel, Drapano bridge and lighthouse.

If you’re fascinated by the ancient world, you can go to Argostoli’s Korgialeneios Library – which has been operating since the 16th century – and look at their collection of rare books and documents. It also houses a Folklore Museum. Here you can get a real sense of the history and culture of the town and island. Take a look at traditional household items, embroideries and linens, with copies available to buy and take home as souvenirs.

There is a bird sanctuary located around a local lagoon and with the town’s backdrop of mountains there are trails and walks where you can explore and take a closer look at the local landscape. On the way, there are opportunities to snap some great photos and pause to take in the panoramic views. Cheap holidays to Kefalonia don’t mean missing out on any of the fun – there are plenty of amazing sights and sounds to enjoy in nature, free of charge.
