History And Directions For Southampton Airport
The first flight at Southampton airport can be dated back to 1910. During the First World War the site was used by the U.S. Army and after the war it became a refugee camp, mainly Russians, wishing to sail to America via Southampton. In 1932 Southampton Corporation bought the site and renamed it Southampton Municipal Airport. There was continued growth and expansion during the 1960’s and 70’s and in 1994 with the opening of a new terminal it was re-branded under the name BAA Southampton International Airport. The airport now handles over 2 million passengers a year making it the 20th largest airport in the UK.
BAA Southampton International Airport is located approximately 4 miles from Southampton in Eastleigh and the airport is less than a mile from Junction 5 of the M27 and the M3 is just over a mile away. There is a regular bus service (every 15 minutes) from the city centre to the airport. A rail link; Southampton Airport Parkway Station is only 50 metres from the terminal building linking the airport with towns and cities throughout the south of England.
