History And Directions For Liverpool Airport
Liverpool John Lennon Airport was formerly known as Speke airport and its first scheduled flight was in 1930. During the Second World War it was used as an RAF base and was aptly named RAF Speke. A new runway was opened in 1966 paving the way for further expansion throughout the decades; a 42.5 million investment in a modern passenger terminal was completed in 2002. Catering mainly for low cost operators, the growth of Liverpool John Lennon Airport has been phenomenal. The airport takes its name from legendary Beatle, John Lennon, named in his honour 22 years after his death and takes their logo “above us only sky” a line from Lennon’s song “Imagine”.
Located 7.5 miles south east of Liverpool city centre, the airport has easy access from the M57, M62 and the M56. A short bus ride connects the airport to Liverpool Central and Liverpool South Parkway railway stations and there is a regular bus service from the city centre to the airport.
